Why Oprah Winfrey Is Obsessed With Her Wrinkle In Time Barbie
Toys and other merchandise are big ways for studios to cross-promote and make more money off of big budget movies. Therefore, it's not a real surprise to learn that Disney is releasing a whole line of fancy A Wrinkle in Time Barbies to coincide with the movie. What is touching, however, is how much Wrinkle star Oprah Winfrey loves the Barbie doll based on her character. Ina recent interview, she explained why the A Wrinkle in Time Barbie meant so much to her. She said:
I grew up a poor Negro child. I had, literally, a corncob doll, where you take the corn, shuck it, and then you try to make a little doll and you use the silk for the hair... You grew up with a corncob doll, and so the idea of a Barbie doll -- Barbies were always too expensive. You're not going to get a Barbie. You're certainly not going to find a brown one. To now have a doll made in the image of your character is a pretty phenomenal moment. It is not lost on me that that has happened. It's a pretty phenomenal thing.
Over the years, Oprah Winfrey has been pretty open about her early life. Her mother went away, leaving her in poverty with her grandmother as a young child, and she didn't have much growing up. She's opened up previously about sexual abuse she endured, as well as an early pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage. Life was hard for Oprah Winfrey growing up, and even though she's just talking about a doll, she told Yahoo that it used to be unfathomable for her to even consider a toy like a nice shiny new Barbie, and even if she had been able to afford one, it wouldn't have resembled her. Sometimes it's the little things that really resonate, and for Oprah, this seems to be one of those moments.
A Wrinkle in Time also produced a slew of other Barbies for the movie, including looks at Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon's characters, who play Mrs. Who and Mrs. Whatsit, respectively. Oprah Winfrey is playing Mrs. Which in the upcoming adaptation of Madeline L'Engle's popular novel. The movie has made changes to the novel in order to reflect a diverse cast, and Ava DuVernay told us previously that she wanted to reflect "the real world" with her casting choices and that she hopes diverse casting becomes "the new normal" for Hollywood movies like A Wrinkle in Time.
As for the other two actresses, if you thought Oprah would be the one going, "You get a Barbie," that role actually seems to have gone to Reese Witherspoon, who also admitted she bought "seven" of the dolls and they've been going like hotcakes at her house.
As for A Wrinkle in Time, the movie has already screened for critics, and will be released wide into theaters on March 9. If you'd like to learn more about the flick, head here.
