Aubrey Plaza May Be Joining The Childs Play Reboot
Given the massively popular trend of nostalgia, just about any movie could return for a reboot or long awaited sequel. But this has always been the case with the horror genre, which capitalizes on iconography to produce countless sequels starring popular villains like Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees. And while a new Halloween movie will hit theaters this October, there is reportedly a Child's Play reboot in the works as well. Starring the wise cracking and murderous Chucky doll, Child's Play has always had elements of both horror and comedy. It seems like a great time to bring back Child's Play, and a new rumor indicates both Aubrey Plaza and Atlanta's Brian Tyree Henry may be circling roles in the developing project.
This new report comes from Collider, and is sure to be exciting for moviegoers who also subscribe to FX. With Aubrey Plaza having a critically acclaimed run on Legion and Brian Tyree Henry recently earning an Emmy nomination for his series regular role in Atlanta. While the new Child's Play may be a divisive subject among fans of the franchise, it's comforting to know that they're going for major talent. Whether either of these actor ends up confirmed and dueling Chucky in the new sequel remains a mystery.
The new Child's Play might have some strong actors attached to it, but the film's plot is going to turn some heads. According to the first reports, the reboot will actually focus on a group of kids, a la IT or Stranger Things-- with Aubrey Plaza possibly playing the mother of one of the kids. While this seems like a good enough choice, Chucky will also reportedly be technologically advanced. It's a big concept to add to an already complicated canon-- which includes magic, curses, a wife, and even a little doll son. Might as well throw in some cool tech.
Horror franchises have historically convoluted timelines, as there were many years before the MCU's serialized storytelling would change the landscape of film production. So a Child's Play reboot should give the director and writers the ability to craft a new story. But giving Chucky some Predator-like weaponry is certainly going to be a departure for the iconic horror franchise.
Getting Aubrey Plaza involved in Child's Play reboot seems like a great choice, as the 34 year-old actress has made quite the name for herself over the past few years. In addition to her beloved role in Parks and Recreation, Plaza has starred in projects like Dirty Grandpa and Ingrid Goes West. And on the small screen, Plaza's dynamic performance in Legion has elevated her nerd culture fame, and earned her critical acclaim.
