Disney Helped Ava DuVernay Stage The First Wrinkle In Time Screening In Compton

Coming off the success of Black Panther from the folks over at Marvel Studios, Disney is gearing up for its next big release, A Wrinkle in Time. The first theatrical adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's 1962 novel was helmed by Selma director Ava DuVernay, and it's clear from the trailers that DuVernay's vision of A Wrinkle in Time is something visually spectacular. While the average moviegoer still has another week to go before they can check out A Wrinkle in Time, DuVernay recently stopped by her hometown of Compton to hold the first public screening for the movie, as you'll see in the video below.

While early movie screenings are typically held at a traditional movie theater, but since there aren't any around in Compton, Ava DuVernay and Disney were able to set up the special A Wrinkle in Time screening at a community center. While I don't have an exact seat count, it looks like a lot more people were able to watch the movie then if this had been held at a traditional cinematic setting. And thankfully, as DuVernay noted in her Twitter post, both the picture and sound quality came out top notch, and judging by the audience reaction, it's safe to say this was a successful event.

A Wrinkle in Time has already held early screenings for the press, celebrities and other lucky individuals, but it was particularly cool that Ava DuVernay decided to hold this special screening in Compton, and Disney was willing to oblige. Now that DuVernay is a successfully Hollywood director, she can use her status to help give back to her community, which is undoubtedly appreciated since it sounds like many of the people in that auditorium might not have been able to see A Wrinkle in Time had that screening not been held. This is also reminds me of the numerous Black Panther screenings that have been organized over the last few weeks for underprivileged youth, which included one put together by T'Challa himself, Chadwick Boseman.

Like the original book, A Wrinkle in Time follows a young girl named Meg Murry who goes on a journey with her younger brother and new friend to rescue her father from imprisonment on a far-off planet, along the way being aided by the three immortal women know as Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who. The main cast consists of Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Levi Miller, Deric McCabe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis and Michael Pea.

A Wrinkle in Time opens in theaters on March 9. For those wanting to plan the rest of their moviegoing calendar accordingly, you can find out what's coming our later this year by browsing through our 2018 release schedule.

Black Panther's Vibranium Vs. Wolverine's Adamantium: Which Is The Strongest Material?

By  at August 02, 2020  , , , ,  No comments
Black Panther's Vibranium Vs. Wolverine's Adamantium: Which Is The Strongest Material?

Two of Marvels most beloved characters, Wolverine and Black Panther, are both dependent on exotic metals to aid them with their powers. For Black Panther, his vibranium suit is essential to his success and for Wolverine, adamantium is crucial to his indestructibility.

Both metals are used elsewhere in the Marvel universe, like Captain Americas shield, which is made partly from vibranium, and Ultrons body, which is coated in adamantium in the comics, but they are most closely associated with Black Panther and Wolverine.

So with vibranium vs. adamantium, which is the more power metal? Which is more indestructible? What would happen if the two most powerful metals in the universe were used by their heroes against each other? There are some slight differences between the comic universe and the MCU, so well highlight that a little bit as well. Lets break them down and figure it out.

Black Panthers Vibranium SuitVibranium is a rare metal found in very limited quantities around the globe, including and especially in a large stockpile in Black Panthers home, Wakanda. Its a virtually indestructible metal that landed in Wakanda on a meteor millions of years ago and has shaped life in the region ever since. Its presence there has had an enormous impact on the country and its citizens in all kinds of ways.

The most notable way it has affected Wakandans is their use of it to become the most technologically advanced county in the world. Vibranium's unique qualities have made it essentially in Wakandan life. Not only that, but in the comics, Wakanda's citizens have occasionally sold off small amounts for huge amounts of money to help them build their technology.

One of vibraniums most important characteristics, besides its indestructibility, is its ability to absorb energy of almost any kind. This characteristic is especially important in Black Panthers suit, called his Panther Habit, and in Captain Americas shield. If you ever wondered how Cap could absorb a mighty strike from Thors hammer, your answer is found in the vibranium used by Howard Stark to forge the shield.

The forging of Captain Americas shield is slightly different in the comics. In the comics, a scientist named Myron MacLain obtained a small amount of vibranium and tried to create an alloy to make an indestructible armor. Instead, after failing to meld vibranium with iron, and by accident, he created a small amount of an alloy that he then used to create the shield. Interestingly, in the comic universe, adamantium was also invented by Myron MacLain when he tried to replicate the process unsuccessfully, so the metals are clearly related. This, however, they have not been connected in the MCU, though maybe that will change with the Disney/Fox merger and the possibility of more X-Men in the MCU.

The second important way that vibranium is used in Wakanda is in Black Panthers suit. The Panther Habit is a suit weaved from vibranium that has been worn by kings and princes of Wakanda for hundreds of years when they become Blank Panther. Currently, its worn by TChalla, the current Black Panther.

The suit a huge part of what makes Black Panther Black Panther. Sure, hes trained from a young age to be a general, a warrior and an expert in hand to hand battle, and he takes the Heart-Shaped Herb to to enhance his physical attributes. Still, without the suit, it'd be a lot harder for him to be a superhero. The vibranium suit and its ability to defuse energy allows him to take punches, stabs, bullets and just about anything else that an enemy could through at him in a fight. But could it protect him from a swipe from Wolverines adadmantium claws?

Wolverines Adamantium ClawsWolverines adamantium skeleton and claws are not his super power. Its his superpower that allowed him to survive the surgery that covered his skeleton (including the claws) with adamantium. It was Wolverines super healing powers that allowed the scientist at Weapon X to coat his skeleton in the nearly indestructible metal.

The metallic recipe to make adamantium is a closely guarded government secret in the comics and in the movies, but as we mentioned, it is known, at least in the comics, to be an alloy that includes steel and vibranium. In the comics, there are also a bunch of different kinds of adamantium but for arguments sake, were going to stick with the kind that Wolverine originally had covering his bones. In the comics, its called True adamantium, since there is no specific designation in the movie.

Adamantium is described as being completely indestructible, and indeed, it seems to be in the movies. Though, in Logan we learn that it is also poisoning Wolverine as his healing powers weaken as he ages.

Since there isnt much more in the movies, sticking with the comic version of adamantium, we know that Adamantium is the strongest metal in the world. Which leads us to the big matchup...

Vibranium Vs. AdamantiumIn a head to head battle, there really is no contest. In the comics, its clear that despite vibraniums ability to defuse energy, Black Panther wouldnt be able to keep Wolverines adamantium claws from slicing the Panther Habit and himself to ribbons. In the comics, there are a few times when it is show that the vibranium suit is not effective in repelling slices. When faced with slices from Wolverines adamantium claws, it wouldnt stand a chance.

But that doesnt mean that Black Panters vibranium suit wouldnt be useful in other respects against adamantium. In X-Men Origins: Wolverine, William Stryker shoots Logan with adamantium bullets, rendering him unconscious and with memory loss. Because of the energy absorbing properties of vibranium, its likely that Blank Pathers suit would absorb all the power from the bullet and defuse it like it does any other bullet. The metal makeup of the bullet would be irrelevant.

Vibranium would be more or less useless against Wolverines adamantium body as well. It is not as strong and would probably shatter if it hit the adamantium with enough force. There simply isnt a stronger metal in the Marvel Universe. That means that the takeaway from it all it is that adamantium, the stronger metal alloy, and the right superhero with it, namely Wolverine, would be able to defeat Black Panther and his vibranium suit.

Let us know your thoughts on the vibranium vs. adamantium matchup in the comments below, and stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more news on the cinematic futures of Wolverine, Black Panther and all the other Marvel heroes.

Glass Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The Unbreakable Sequel

Glass Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The Unbreakable Sequel

It's been 19 years since Unbreakable was released and in that time, while many fans have wanted a sequel, it seemed highly unlikely it was ever going to actually happen. However, following the insane success of Split, a movie that was sort of a sequel, we now have Glass a film that will finally complete the story of Elijah and David Dunn. So was it worth the wait?

The early reviews on Glass were far from kind, and there are several on the CinemaBlend team who would throw in with those sentiment's the official review was written by Events Editor Eric Eisenberg, who gave the film 1.5 stars out of five who ultimately found the final product to be, quite simply, boring...

M. Night Shyamalan has made a lot of bad movies in his career, and Glass lines up right alongside The Happening and The Lady In The Water on that particular scale. For a minute it seemed like perhaps the writer/director had created a fun niche in small-scale superhero storytelling, but the end of his Eastrail 177 Trilogy proves that idea was a fallacy. You wouldn't think a follow-up to two solid films like Unbreakable and Split would manage to be this boring before culminating as a total disaster, but that's ultimately the franchise narrative that has been written here.

Overall Eric is probably the harshest critic of Glass at CinemaBlend., but he's not the only one. Managing Director Sean O'Connell does have some praise for the way the movie starts, but, in the end, he feels the ending of Glass is so bad that it ultimately, does damage to the entire trilogy.

Glass disappoints. But it disappoints in a way that actually damages both Split AND Unbreakable, and that's hard to do. You won't believe me when you are watching the movie, because for the first hour, it's actually a damn good follow up to M. Night Shyamalan's two super-powered-beings films. But the third act twist (or series of twists) totally derails Glass, and the movie can't recover. What once was intriguing has now become silly, and that's frustrating to admit.

To the degree that the CinemaBlend team agrees on anything regarding Glass, there does seem to be a general agreement among the team that the film starts strong, but that it simply isn't able to stick the landing. For project manager Cody Beck, this was a real problem because the ending was the part he was looking forward to.

Unfortunately, Glass did not shatter any expectations. The storyline grabbed and kept the interest of the audience but then quickly spiraled around the third act- which arguably contained the scenes I was most excited to see, judging from the trailers. It seemed as if Shyamalan was aggressively trying to show the audience (almost breaking the 4th wall, even) "Look! This is how comic books work!" The revelation of a shared universe between the films was interesting, but after seeing the conclusion of the trilogy in Glass, I wish the films had remained independent projects.

CinemaBlend analyst Braden Roberts echo's Cody's feelings. Ultimately, the climactic finale was anything but...

Glass sells itself as the climactic finale to Unbreakable and Split, setting the stage for our "heroes" to finally confront one another. Despite an interesting first act, the film quickly deteriorates with corny dialogue, poor acting and heavy handed themes that ultimately extinguish the flame of the first two. The climatic third-act confrontation is the biggest let-down of Glass, and unfortunately the series ends just as it began, in a trainwreck.

For marketing Editor Adrienne Jones, that mess of a final act might have been salvageable, if perhaps it hadn't been quite so damn long.

Glass starts off fine, with the first two acts clearly establishing the conflict to come. But, the final act drones on forever as we realize that, SURPRISE, M. Night Shyamalan had a twist in store, which he needs to have explained to us by Mr. Glass as all the major characters gather to watch or participate in the most boring and ridiculous "superpower" battle ever filmed.

Similarly, for writer Nick Evans, Glass feels like a movie that was made even though there was clearly no real plan for what to do with these characters once they crossed paths.

M. Night Shyamalan created such a cool premise and compelling original superheroes in Unbreakable and Split but in Glass he couldn't come up with anything interesting to do with them. There are some worthwhile ideas here but the desire to subvert expectations and bend the story to fit a theme results in a movie that feels like an unnatural and anticlimactic conclusion to the trilogy. Ultimately, Glass is a failure of imagination that shatters under the weight of expectations.

However, it's not all terribly bad news. There were a handful of people with at least somewhat more positive things to say. CinemaBlend writer Sarah El-Mahmoud says that she found Glass entertaining, not in spite of the ridiculous plot decision or terrible dialogue, but rather because of them.

Was I entertained by Glass? Yes, but probably for the wrong reasons: its dumb dialogue & plot lines. At Glass' conclusion, it's lazily orchestrated and nowhere near gratifying enough to be 19 years in the making. Either way, fans of the first two might still get a kick out of seeing it all play out, if you're game for some silliness and can push aside what could have been.

Sarah points out that fans of the Unbreakable and Split might have an easier time finding something to love about Video Producer Alli Ladd admits to being one of those people, and while she still had issues, she did ultimately enjoy the final product.

The character development was my favorite part of Glass, and James Mcavoy's Kevin Wendel Crum allowed for some comedic relief. The ending was a twist, within a twist, within a twist, because...M. Night. But, it was too much to take in all at once to really understand what Shyamalan was going for. However, being a big Unbreakable and Split fan, I enjoyed the story a lot. I liked the film much more than most critics.

It does simply go to show that sometimes perspective really makes the difference. While our official review found Glass to be boring, VP of Product Mack Rawden simply calls the movie a "slow grind," and if you don't mind deliberate storytelling, then there might be something here worth enjoying.

Glass has a very creative and emotionally complicated first two acts. It takes its time and poses some really fascinating questions. Then it goes off the rails with a more adventurous conclusion that is often mediocre and occasionally stupid. All together, it's like a fine-minus, worth seeing if you're particularly interested or if you just like slow grind movies that take a more unique and challenging path.

The most positive review likely comes from Movies Editor Corey Chichizola, who, in the end, appreciated what director M. Night Shyamalan was trying to accomplish, and feels that the character's stories ultimately work. However, he admits, each viewer will have to decide if it was all worth it.

Glass is a typical M. Night Shyamalan movie; it's ambitious, sometimes to a fault. But the way that he weaved together the stories and characters is impressive and feels very deliberate. What's more, the movie's quartet of stars still allows room for the trio of supporting characters, who carry the heart of the movie. Put the reviews aside, and go check it out for yourself.

There are many opinions here, and while many of them might have keyed in on similar ideas, there is really not that much agreement. There's no real ringing endorsement, but that doesn't mean Glass won't be worth it for many people. It's in theaters now.
